Our Formal Portrait

I keep forgetting to post this photo, it's the official portrait of the Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse taken by one of our gracious hosts. Click on it to see a larger version. For the backstory, see this early November post.

Fellow Presidential Geek 2

I hope I'm never this enthusiastic about a President. But were I standing in TR's Sagamore house, I'd likely be as giddy as Mo Rocca in this video.

Tonight's the Night

Last night at the Westminster Dog Show, a 15" beagle named Uno took the hound group, the Sealyham who won the Eukanuba took the terrier group, a gorgeous red merle Australian Shepherd took the herding group and a whilte poodle won the non-sporting group. Tonight the final three groups will be awarded and Best in Show - the most exciting part - will be named.

Photo of the Week 7

This Keith Haring mural is one of two at Rush Medical Center here in Chicago. Haring started his art career illegally drawing in chalk on NYC subway walls. He finished it in fanfare as he painted in hospitals, schools, community centers and public plazas before dying of AIDS in 1990.

I walked past both the Rush murals just about every day in nursing school and again this week. They always brighten my day. It's unfortunate but necessary, I suppose, that they were recently covered in plexiglass.

How often does this happen?

I was just tooling down a neighborhood street in the dead of winter with my little dog and looked up... a cotton candy vendor! Four days before my birthday! SWEET! It's lent, so I did not partake, but this did not lessen the thrill of the happening. Another blog entry will be devoted to why I still participate in the annual ritual of lent despite being agnostic.

Puppy Bowl IV

Don't know how I missed this, but Puppy Bowl IV apparently ran simultaneously with the Super Bowl yesterday.

Way to create an alternative viewing experience, Animal Planet!

Highlights available here. Be sure to stick around long enough for the Kitty Half Time Show.

And be sure to check out the winner of the MVP (most valuable puppy, of course) who won with 22,000 votes!

I've always heard that art should be made from what you know, and right now, this is all Chicago knows...

BYOB

I don't know if it's enough to save the planet, but I'm thinking this bring your own bag thing is a good idea. Not only does it eliminate those annoying, earth-enemy plastic bags, but most of the reusable bags make for a far more efficient and careful way to transport groceries. Bananas and apples don't get as bruised. There's another side-effect I find happening. I feel more conscious and connected when I use them. My food choices are more sensible. It seems inconsistent to put Doritos and Oreos in a reusable bag. Maybe it's the snowball effect I found with the new recycling containers, maybe it's just me.
