Mom's Cancer

While I'm recommending books, here's another wonderful one - Mom's Cancer by Brian Fies. I interviewed him for Sequential Tart, which will be live in the first few days of July. Here's an interview with Brian from All Things Considered on NPR today.

New Poet Laureate

Our new national Poet Laureate has been announced, Donald Hall
I'm disappointed that it's another white man (updating the stats of my cartoon from April, we now have had 43 Poet Laureates of the United States - 36 of them have been white men) I still support the concept. Here is one of Hall's best known poems:

Pale gold of the walls, gold

of the centers of daisies, yellow roses

pressing from a clear bowl. All day

we lay on the bed, my hand

stroking the deep

gold of your thighs and your back.

We slept and woke

entering the golden room together,

lay down in it breathing

quickly, then

slowly again,

caressing and dozing, your hand sleepily

touching my hair now.

We made in those days

tiny identical rooms inside our bodies

which the men who uncover our graves

will find in a thousand years,

shining and whole.

Fun Home

Alison Bechdel, twenty year author and artist of "Dykes To Watch Out For" has released her first graphic memoir, Fun Home. It is a stunning book with an unlikely but true plot that will launch the medium farther forward than it has already been launched in the past ten years. Run, don't walk, to your local independent bookstore, to pick up a copy of this one.

Beenie Loves Bubbles

A recent commission, the Sit Stay Read dog of the year, Beenie. He loves to chase and eat bubbles. So, here's the piece, Beenie Loves Bubbles - the remix.

Birthdays

Yesterday was Alice's 5th birthday. Despite the somewhat obscene pose she strikes here (and every morning) I've decided this is her official birthday portrait. It captures the essence of her charmed life. Note her empty bed in the background. Got word from Canada that Alice's littermate, Prissy, had 10 puppies on their birthday.

______

Tomorrow is my nephew Jack's 3rd birthday. We celebrated with BBQ dinner, gooey sweet cake, a few presents and playing outside yesterday. His sweet laugh and delighted smile are heartstopping reminders of what we so wish not to lose as we grow to four and beyond.

Run Run Run Run Runaway...

New cartoon posted last week, "Runaway." It was the outcome of some Memorial Day reminiscing with mom.
